With the recent technological developments in biomedical research, ¡°bioinformatics¡± has drawn a lot of attention. Bioinformatics research, from a computer scientist¡¯s point of view, can be classified into three categories: (1) developing algorithms and software tools that analyze and make it possible to understand biomedical data; (2) processing & organizing the raw data in a way such that biomedical knowledge bases can be constructed to facilitate biomedical research; (3) solving important biological problems or discovering new biomedical information by representing & integrating various types of data when the raw data is generated in a very large volume and do this at an unprecedented speed.

Artificial Inteligence (AI) Laboratory is part of the Department of Computer Science at Hanyang University. Our research focuses on AI systems that exhibit the characteristics we associate with intelligence in human behavior, and also IR systems that search for documents (or information within documents) in large-scale text databases or Social Networks on the World Wide Web.

The fields of research for our Lab are the theory and practice of computer algorithms, especially focusing on ¡°Information Security¡±, ¡°Bioinformatics¡± and ¡°String matching¡±. We research cryptographic algorithms and encryption protocols in ¡°Information Security¡±, DNA sequencing and tandem mass spectrum analysis algorithms for ¡°Bioinformatics¡±. Furthermore, we also study several algorithms that are used for search engines and data structure indexing, such as suffix trees and suffix arrays for ¡°String matching¡±. These fields require extremely high-cost operations, which is why we concentrate on improving pre-exist algorithms¡¯ performance and implementing them efficiently.

Our research interests are in computer graphics and animation, including physics-based animation, character animation, control algorithms, and robotics. We focus on designing computational models that capture and analyze human motions and to create highly realistic animations that interact with users and various environmental conditions in an intelligent and robust manner.
Human-Computer Interaction Lab (HCI Lab) aims to innovate the quality of human life and lead future technologies by understanding human-computer interactions and human factors. These goals will be achieved with the computer science technologies that include virtual reality, graphics, and robotics. We also aim to understand the cognition, emotions, behaviors, brain, and bio-signal for people with/without handicaps.
Our research group works on the mining of large-scale data obtained from biological and medical samples. As we move toward this objective, we are developing new computational methods and systems that are based on machine learning, probabilistic model, string pattern matching, and distributed computing. In addition to advancing the frontiers of bioinformatics research. These efforts should also help elucidate the relationships between genotype and phenotype, which are of immediate relevance to human disease diagnosis and therapeutics..

Recent advancements in hardware technologies enable vendors to build high-end computing platforms with unprecedented computing power and storage capacity. Despite these cutting-edge technologies, the software systems were designed decades ago and have been showing their limitations in how much they can exploit available hardware resources, thus leading to resource over-provisioning problems. Multicore operating systems Lab seeks out innovative solutions that will make legacy software scalable on multicore-based high-end computing platforms. Although research topics are open, the ongoing research projects are high-performance database systems and fast storage systems based on non-volatile memory.
