컴퓨터의 하드웨어 구조와 컴퓨터 시스템을 구성하는 기본 소프트웨어인 운영 체제 분야를 연구한다. 이제, 컴퓨터 시스템의 개념은 개인용 컴퓨터나 서버 외에 네비게이터, 텔레비젼 등 가전제품, 휴대폰 등의 통신 제품은, 물론 자동차, 항공기, 공장자동화 시스템 등 산업 전반의 기기에 내장되어 다른 제품과 결합해 부가적인 기능을 수행하고 있으며, 이를 임베디드 시스템이라고 한다. 임베디드 시스템에서는 처리 시간의 제약이 있거나 하드웨어 처리 능력이 매우 떨어지는 등 일반적인 컴퓨팅 환경과는 매우 다르며, 이에 본 학부에서는 다음 분야를 연구하고 있다: 하드웨어-소프트웨어 코디자인, 저전력 컴퓨팅, 실시간 컴퓨팅, 임베디드 소프트웨어 엔지니어링, 임베디드 저장장치 시스템, 임베디드 운영체제, 임베디드 컴퓨터 구조, 임베디드 데이터베이스 등

데이터베이스 및 지식공학 관련 교수진 : 김상욱, 차재혁, 정형수, 서지원
본 연구 그룹은 다양한 형태의 데이터를 효율적으로 저장 관리해야하는 데이터베이스 기술과 대용량의 데이터에 대해 통계, 인공지능, 기계학습과 같은 다양한 기법을 활용하여 의미 있는 패턴 혹은 지식을 찾아내는 데이터마이닝 기술에 대한 연구를 수행한다. 구체적으로 최신 멀티코어 시스템과 플래시기반 고속 저장장치로 이루어진 고성능 서버를 고려한 단일 혹은 분산 데이터베이스 설계 기술에 대한 연구와 소셜 네트워크 빅 데이터 분석 및 추천 시스템을 위한 데이터 마이닝 기술에 대한 연구를 수행중이다.

실질적으로 인간을 대신하거나, 혹은 인간에게 도움을 줄수 있는 시스템을 설계하기 위해서는 인간의 지능을 대신할 수 있는 기계지능 혹은 인공지능 기술이 반드시 필요하다. 불확실성에 취약한 현재의 인공지능 기술의 한계를 극복하고, 실제로 쓰일 수 있는 고도의 지능 시스템을 구현하기 위하여, 기존의 인지, 추론, 학습 기술에 대한 연구와 더불어 예측에 의한 오류 극복 등 여러 가지 선도적 기반 기술을 연구하고 있다. 이와 같은 기반기술을 자율주행 및 로봇 운행을 위한 물체 추적, 3차원 환경 인식, 의미론적 영상 분할 및 인식, 온톨로지 기반 로봇지능, 지능형 정보검색 및 협력추천, SNS 텍스트 마이닝, 스마트 러닝, 시맨틱 웹, 바이오데이터 마이닝 및 개인별 맞춤 의약과 같은 최신 분야에 효과적으로 적용하기 위한 차세대 응용 기술에 대해서도 활발한 연구를 수행하고 있다.

영상처리 및 가상현실 관련 교수진 : 박종일, 장의선, 임종우, 권태수, 김광욱, 이윤상
영상처리란 컴퓨터를 이용하여 영상을 생성, 처리, 분석, 인식하는 영상과 관련된 모든 분야를 뜻한다. 그 세부분야로는 컴퓨터를 이용하여 합성 영상을 생성하는 컴퓨터 그래픽(Computer Graphics), 이미 생성된 영상을 입력하여 정보를 추출하거나 변화 시키는 영상처리(Image Processing), 영상내의 패턴이나 객체를 인식하고 영상을 이해하는 컴퓨터 비전(Computer Vision)등이 있다.
가상현실(VR: Virtual Reality) 이란 현실은 아니지만 현실과 구분되지 않을 정도로 정교하게 만들어진 가공의 세계를 의미한다. 가상현실 시스템은 가상환경(VE), 컴퓨팅 환경, 가상현실 입출력 기술 및 상호 작용 방식의 4요소로 구성된다.

응용컴퓨팅(생물정보학 및 HCI) 관련 교수진 : 백은옥, 박희진, 노미나, 김광욱
최근 바이오 분야에서는 Genomics와 Proteomics 분야가 활발히 연구되고 있다. Genomics는 생명의 코드를 저장하고 있는 대량의 유전자 정보를 분석하는 분야이며, Proteomics 는 생명체 내에서 실제로 다양한 기능을 담당하는 대량의 단백질 정보를 분석하는 분야이다. Genomics와 Proteomics 분야에서는 한 번 실험의 결과로 수백 GByte의 데이터가 생산되는 등 데이터의 생산 및 축적량이 급속도로 증가하므로, 바이오 데이터를 효율적으로 처리하기 위한 알고리즘의 개발이 매우 중요하다. 또한, 일차적인 분석이 완료된 바이오 데이터를 가공하여 의미 있는 정보를 추출하는 과정에서 machine learning 및 시맨틱 네트워크 기술 등 인공지능 기술의 활용이 폭넓게 이루어지고 있다. 더불어, 다양한 환경과 사용자를 고려한 human-centered UI/UX에 대한 수요가 점점 증가하고 있으며, 인간-컴퓨터 상호작용 기술이나 컴퓨터 기술을 활용하여 인간의 신체적, 정신적 문제에 대해 연구하고 이를 돕고자 하는 분야도 활발한 연구 대상이다.

알고리즘 및 계산이론 분야는 새롭게 알고리즘을 개발하고 개발된 알고리즘의 정확성을 증명하며 시간/공간 복잡도를 연구하는 분야이다. 또한 어떤 문제가 실제로 계산 가능한지 연구하는 분야이다. 최근 스트링 매칭 알고리즘과 효율적인 검색을 위해 인덱스를 생성하는 알고리즘이 많이 연구되고 있으며 이 알고리즘은 생물정보학 분야와 네트워크 보안 분야 그리고 정보 검색 분야에 널리 사용된다.
